Census Key: Agriculture

1880 U.S. Census: Agriculture Schedules for HadleyTownship, Pike County, Illinois

When the original enumerator’s schedules were assembled, page 5 was changed to page 8 and pages 6, 7 and 8 were changed to 5, 6, and 7.  The page numbers were crossed out and changed.  The original page 5 was moved to the page 8 position.

We examined the dwelling numbers, family numbers, names, ages, and places of birth.  We concluded that this page switch was an error on the part of the enumerator or someone at the Census Bureau.  In order to keep family members and neighbors listed together, we have returned these listings to what we believe to be their original, and correct, positions.  We have used the original numbers.  Researchers viewing images of the original schedules should be mindful of this discrepancy.

All census takers made errors, but the 1880 enumerator for Hadley Township was particularly unreliable with regard to places of birth.  He consistently spelled both Jesse and Jessie as Jessee, Elizabeth as Elizebeth, Rachel or Rachael as Racheal, Margaret as Margret, and Michael as Micheal.  His handwriting is difficult to distinguish between Mary and May.  He frequently marked “Maimed, crippled, bedridden, or otherwise disabled” when he likely intended to mark “Attended school within the census year.”
